Firefox Plugin : Rel No Follow

Thursday, May 1st, 2008

Well yesterday I said I would show any one who was interested how you can make no follow links instantly visible so here it is.

  • Quit Firefox and go to the following directory (NB xxx is a random string of eight characters): C:\Documents and Settings\[User Name]\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xxx.default\chrome In there you will find be an example file called userContent-example.css,.
  • Rename this file userContent.css (remove -example)
  • Open up your new userContent.css file and add the following line:
    a[rel~="nofollow"] { border: thin dashed firebrick! important; background-color: rgb(255, 200, 200)! important; }
  • Save and close the file

It really is as simple as that, yet another reason why I choose Firefox as my default browser. Why is this useful? Well in order to get good rankings from Google you need links. Any site which is setting their links to no follow means these will not count against your site, and therefore not improve your page rank. High page rank is not only a great thing to brag about but also helps increase the quality and value of your blog. All the big guys realize that with a higher page rank you can make larger profits due to the extra perceived value of any potential links from that page. I found this little picture which really sums up the importance of no-follow links, just look how happy Darren Rose at Pro Blogger is.

Blogger Page Rank

This is why I have chosen to keep the commenting going on other blogs for as long as I can, to get in the top commentators list and get some of that lovely page rank flowing back to my blog. This week I shall also look into grabbing back links come back tomorrow to see what we have planned.

Well now I feel stupid.

Now as you may or may not know I am a programmer by trade, and yet I have made one of the most fundamental flaws you could possibly make when starting a community driven website like this. I forgot to activate the bloody commenting plug-in. This meant that whilst I was sitting here feeling lonely and unloved by people who had read my little blog so far. It would appear you guys were actually trying to pass comment. Thanks go out to the University Kid and Matt from www.theonlymp.com for emailing me and letting me know. We can only assume that now the commenting feature is working we will be inundated by fabulously intellectual, sophisticated and witty comments from our readers.

The commenting experiment is working well and yesterday we received our highest amount of visitors so far. What I deem to be a hugely impressive, quite frankly awe-inspiring 27 visits. Ok I exaggerate, but we are seeing a daily increase and if this continues? Well surly it won’t take long till we’re up there with the likes of Tyler or indeed the infamous cow. I can only put this insurgence of traffic down to the fact that we are on the top commenter list on John Chow, Shoemoney and Tyler Cruz with only The Rating Blog being seemingly impossible to break into. Damn the people there have a lot to say. How they have the time to post all these comments I don’t know. I’m starting to think Alan maybe either A) employing them or B) impersonating commentators. Not that I would want to stir up any controversy by saying such things. I do find it just a little odd that the majority of the top commenter’s don’t have a website of their own. You don’t see that many other big blogs now do you?
